Your Next Summer Adventure Is Closer Than You Think

Katherine Palumbo is the storyteller behind @explore.ontario, one of Ontario’s leading travel-focused content creators. With a passion for showcasing local experiences, hidden gems, and seasonal adventures, Katherine has built a trusted community of Ontario travelers seeking inspiration close to home.

What are some of your favourite summer activities that people can enjoy across Ontario?

The possibilities are endless when it comes to summer travel in Ontario. My favourite ways to spend a weekend are exploring small towns (Perth, Stratford and Elora are my top spots) and visiting a seasonal flower farm; preferably a pick-your-own farm. Laura’s Farm Stand and Valhaven Farm are lovely options that showcase a variety of blooms. I’m also a huge fan of kayaking, but since I don’t own a kayak, I rely upon businesses/parks that offer rentals. Illuminated Escapes takes it one step further and offers glow-in-the-dark kayak rentals with locations in Toronto and the GTA.

How do you think Ontario’s summer season stands out compared to other destinations you’ve visited?

Those who live in Ontario know first-hand how long and treacherous our winters can be – they seem to last forever! So, when the warm weather hits, we really embrace the outdoors. So many people spend their summers vacationing in Europe or the US, but in Ontario there are endless travel destinations to enjoy that don’t involve getting on a plane. There is so much available to us here in our own backyards, and that’s my mission behind Explore Ontario.

Can you share a few hidden-gem summer spots in Ontario that deserve more attention?

The small town of St. Marys is truly underrated! Just a short distance from Stratford, St. Marys has a gorgeous downtown and waterfront walking trail that’s best explored in summer. They even offer a free kayak rental program via their local library! Located in St. Marys is also Canada’s largest fresh water swimming pool – the St. Marys Quarry. It’s the best way to cool off on a hot summer day.

What are some of your favourite ways to experience Ontario’s lakes, beaches, and waterfronts?

In the summer, snagging reservations/daily permits for beaches, provincial parks and national parks can be daunting as they book up so quickly. If you can, try and visit these destinations through the week to avoid crowds. My favourite beach to visit is in Kincardine as it boasts pristine sand, unmatched sunset views, and tons of FREE parking! There is also a lighthouse that’s open to visitors.

Do you have any go-to recommendations for summer road trips or weekend getaways across the province?

Prince Edward County is a beautiful region to visit year-round, but in summer, it truly comes alive. Since it covers such a large area including towns like Picton, Bloomfield and Wellington, it’s easy to spend 2-3 days there. All the breweries and wineries have outdoor seating, and many have live music, outdoor games, fires, and activities for kids. Sandbanks Provincial Park is a must-visit and is home to some of the largest sand dunes globally! Also, there are many hotels, resorts and Airbnbs with outdoor spas/pools (think Wander the Resort and The Royal Hotel) and tons of boating excursions and rentals.

How important is it for you to highlight local businesses, accommodations, and tourism operators in your content?

I started Explore Ontario nearly a decade ago and have never strayed from the mission of only working with partners that are located here in Ontario. From tourism boards to overnight stays, brands, events and businesses, they are 100% Ontario founded and focused. It’s important for me to highlight and promote local businesses as we should all try to support the communities we live in as much as possible.

What’s one unforgettable summer memory you’ve had in Ontario?

My favourite summer memory is visiting Manitoulin Island with my family when I was in middle school. It was my first time hiking the Cup and Saucer Trail, and I’ll never forget the panoramic views from the top of the escarpment. Manitoulin Island is also home to Bridal Veil Falls where visitors can swim and venture behind the falls – the only of its kind in Ontario.

What role do food, patios, and local culinary experiences play in your summer travels?

Ontario has some of the best outdoor culinary experiences in the country! It plays an important role for me when planning local travel, and I know it does for others as well. Ontario is home to hundreds of seasonal pick-your-own fruit and veggie farms and Stratford hosts a range of culinary walking trails that are incredible. Choose from the ‘Chocolate Trail’, ‘Bacon & Ale Trail’, or the seasonal ‘Savour & Sip Trail’ that encourages picnics using local flavours. Another favourite is Purple Hill Lavender’s summer picnic series that sells out every year.

How do you hope your content inspires people to explore Ontario during the summer season?
