Canadians care deeply about animals—and they expect the organizations that serve them to operate with compassion, accountability, and integrity. Humane Canada Accreditation is a national program designed to meet those expectations by recognizing humane societies and SPCAs that demonstrate excellence of care, operational transparency, and meaningful community engagement.
This voluntary accreditation sets clear, evidence-based standards across governance, animal care, and organizational practices. Accredited organizations are independently assessed to ensure they are not only meeting today’s expectations, but are committed to continuous improvement, ethical operations, and public trust. For communities, donors, and pet guardians, accreditation provides confidence that an organization is operating openly, responsibly, and in the best interests of both animals and people.
Ottawa Humane Society led the way as the first organization in Canada to achieve Humane Canada Accreditation, setting a powerful example of sector leadership and accountability. More recently, the Edmonton Humane Society and the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA have earned their accreditation seals, joining a growing group of organizations committed to nationally recognized standards of excellence.
