Can you share a memorable experience where you saw the positive impact of responsible Travel?
Growing up in an Asian household and having travelled to many different Asian countries, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the diversity and values within Asian cultures, especially around food and community. One thing I’ve always loved is how meals are meant to be shared. Instead of everyone ordering their own individual dish, we place everything in the center and eat family-style. Not only does it create a stronger sense of connection, but it’s also naturally more eco-friendly…less food waste, fewer plates, and a more mindful way of eating that’s rooted in tradition.

What are some of your favorite travel destinations, and what makes them stand out?
Some of my favorite travel destinations recently have been China, Vietnam, Ireland, and Poland and I think that has a lot to do with personal and cultural reasons. Specifically for China and Vietnam, being a Chinese-Vietnamese born Canadian citizen, visiting those countries felt like a beautiful mix of discovery and reconnection. China was a significant cultural shock…in a really good way. The pace, the traditions, the energy of the cities–it was unlike anything I had experienced. It challenged my perspective and made me realize just how much western media can shape our perception of places like China. Being there and witnessing everyday life firsthand gave me a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the people and the culture beyond the headlines.

What role do influencers like yourself play in promoting ethical travel practices?
Lead by example. We have the influence and power to shape how others experience the world. By showcasing local businesses we can support through our content–whether it’s a family-run boutique hotel, a neighborhood café, or local vendor. We help shift the focus toward more thoughtful, community-driven travel. It’s about using our platforms to highlight the beauty of traveling responsibly.

How do you incorporate sustainable practices into your trips?
I try to travel mindfully, whether it’s for a personal or work trip by always bringing my own water bottle and toothbrush to cut down on single-use plastics, choosing boutique hotels and locally owned spots over big chains, supporting small restaurants and shops, and opting for public transit or walking whenever I can.

Have you ever made changes to your travel habits after learning about sustainability issues? If so, what were they?
One of the biggest wake-up calls for me was learning how certain chemical sunscreens can harm coral reefs and marine life. Since then, I’ve made the switch to reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreens when I travel, especially to beach or tropical destinations. It seems like such a small change, but over time, these little shifts really add up.

How do you balance the need to capture great content with respecting local cultures and natural environments?
It’s all about finding a balance between capturing meaningful content and respecting the places I’m visiting. I try to blend in as much as possible, whether that means dressing appropriately for the local culture, quietly observing, or being mindful of how my presence may impact a space. I aim to take photos and videos without drawing too much attention or disrupting the flow of daily life. It’s important to not take up any unnecessary physical or mental space, especially in environments that are sacred or sensitive. At the end of the day, I want my content to reflect the beauty and authenticity of a place, without compromising its essence.

What advice do you have for travelers who want to support local communities and businesses in a meaningful way?
Be open-minded and educate yourself before arrival. Take time to understand its customs, history, and culture, it will make your experience richer and more respectful. If you’re traveling to a country with a different language, learning a few basic phrases goes a long way in showing respect to the locals. Being mindful of the rules and customs, like in Hong Kong, where it’s not allowed to eat or drink on public transportation. Little gestures like these help you connect with the community in a way that feels authentic and shows your appreciation for their way of life. Supporting local businesses by buying from markets, eating at family-run restaurants, and choosing eco-friendly accommodations also makes a lasting impact.

Are there any destinations where you’ve noticed particularly impressive sustainability efforts? What stood out to you?
One of the most impressive sustainability efforts I noticed in China was the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. During my visit, I was amazed to see that more than 50% of the cars on the road were electric. It really showcased the country’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and investing in green technology. The government has been heavily promoting EVs through incentives and infrastructure development, such as an extensive network of charging stations, making it easier for people to transition away from traditional fossil-fuel vehicles. It was inspiring to see how quickly EVs have become a part of everyday life in such a large and fast-growing country.
